From Darkness to Purpose: May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it feels like the right time to share my "Why."

As many of you know, I’m currently celebrating eight years of my facility being open and 16 years as a martial arts instructor. This isn't a coincidence; it’s a path born from necessity. In my younger years, I struggled deeply with chronic depression and anxiety, battles that eventually led me to the psychiatric care unit at Binghamton General Hospital in 2002.

That experience was a turning point. When I began training in martial arts, I didn't just find a hobby; I found a new purpose. My journey ever since has been focused on helping others navigate their own paths toward wellness. I’ve built my career on the belief that moving well, eating well, and practicing mindfulness are the keys to a resilient life.

Here are the five pillars I use to maintain my own mental health and help my clients do the same.

1. Finding Meaningful Movement

Traditional exercise running on a treadmill or lifting weights isn't the only way to heal. Movement should be meaningful. Whether it's gardening, hiking, or the focused practice of martial arts, movement triggers the release of endorphins. These "feel-good" chemicals act as natural stress-fighters, improving your sense of well-being far beyond the physical.

2. Fueling for Clarity

Nutrition is a direct driver of mental health. Maintaining a balance of macro and micronutrients ensures your brain has the fuel it needs to function. Most of us have experienced how processed foods and excess sugar can lead to "brain fog" or low moods. This isn't about judgment; it’s about recognizing how what we eat dictates how we feel.

3. The Power of "The Now"

Mindfulness allows us to grasp the present moment. There is a profound saying: "Depression lives in the past, anxiety lives in the future." I practice living in the now through both structured meditation (focus, awareness, and compassion)and non-structured meditation, such as the flow found in martial arts or tasks of daily living.

4. Rest as a Requirement

We cannot perform or heal if we are running on empty. Proper rest is non-negotiable. Quality sleep is when the body repairs its muscles and the brain processes the day's stress. Without it, the everyday challenges of life become significantly harder to tackle.

5. Social Well-Being and Connection

Humans are social creatures. When we interact with a reliable support network, our bodies release oxytocin, often called the "companionship hormone." Whether it’s a fitness group or a group of friends & family, having a community provides the accountability and emotional safety needed to grow.
